Webinar: asthma management in children

by Communications team

We held a webinar to mark the publication of our national investigation report looking at management of chronic asthma in children aged 16 years and under.

Asthma is the most common lung disease in the UK. Diagnosis and management of the condition, particularly in children and young people, can be complex.

Our asthma investigation report was published on 5 May 2021 to coincide with World Asthma Day. Our report features the case study of a 5-year old who had a near fatal asthma attack. It received local, regional and national media coverage, including articles in The Independent and the British Medical Journal, and a blog by Asthma UK.

Webinar content

In this webinar you hear from families, our HSIB investigators and from experts in respiratory illness and behavioural medicine.

The investigation team cover:

  • The HSIB approach to investigations.
  • An asthma investigation summary, outputs and key messages.
  • An interview with one of our national investigators.

The webinar also features a brief film in which bereaved mother, Dawn, spoke movingly of her daughter Tamara, who died aged 13 in 2014 after suffering an asthma attack.

It also helps you understand how HSIB’s experience can be applied to your own healthcare setting, as well as finding out what work will be undertaken nationally to implement the safety recommendations in our asthma investigation report.

Guests include:

  • Dr Jen Townshend, Paediatric Consultant.
  • Rob Horne, Professor of Behavioural Medicine.
  • Dr Louise Fleming, Reader at the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Thank you

We would like to thank everyone who made our webinar a success. This includes the 400+ people who attended online from all parts of the country, Tamara’s mum Dawn who shared her story with us and allowed it to be shown during our webinar, and our panellists.
