Representatives from HSIB attended a prestigious awards ceremony in Manchester yesterday evening (2 July 2019) to celebrate the organisations who continue to drive improved patient outcomes across the UK.
The HSJ Patient Safety Awards, held as part of the Patient Safety Congress 2019, recognised safety innovations across 22 different categories. HSIB was shortlisted in the ‘best emerging solution for patient safety’ category. On the night we missed out on the award, which went to Imperial College Health Partners, the Patient Safety Measurement Unit and Oxford Academic Health Science Network, who were recognised for their sepsis identification tool.
Our submission focused on how we have taken a family liaison approach used by the police in serious crime investigations and adapted it for healthcare investigations.
Representing HSIB were Medical Director, Dr Kevin Stewart, Head of Family Engagement, Lou Pye and Intelligence Analyst, Ciara Parker.
Lou said: “Being shortlisted as a finalist for these awards is great testimony to the process we have implemented to ensure we work with and listen to patients and families. Their involvement and input in our investigations is invaluable and ensures we understand both their perspective and the impact on their lives. We would like to offer our congratulations to the winners of this category.”
Kevin said: “Lou has worked tirelessly to implement this and engaged with investigators constantly across both our national and maternity investigation teams. Feedback from families so far has been overwhelmingly positive and this nomination is a fantastic endorsement of the work that we do and highlights our commitment to improving patient safety through high quality investigations.”
Hundreds of entries were submitted for the awards by organisations who continue to lead the way in driving improved outcomes for patients. Judging for the awards took place across two stages, with all entries scored remotely to choose the shortlist, followed by presentations to a panel. Judges were recruited from a range of disciplines and backgrounds to reflect the workforce of the NHS across the UK.
Congratulations to everyone who was shortlisted for an award. Visit the HSJ Patient Safety Awards website for a full list of shortlisted entries and winners
