Through our maternity investigations, we hear the devastating experiences from families who have lost a baby. We recognise the importance of Baby Loss Awareness Week and the work that is being done to support families and raise awareness of pregnancy loss and the death of a baby.

This year, the Baby Loss Awareness Alliance is highlighting the isolation that is felt after loss. This is particularly pertinent due to the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) distancing measures and restrictions.

Sandy Lewis, Associate Director of the HSIB Maternity Investigation Programme, says: “We are grateful and give our thanks to the families who generously give their time and who have shared openly their thoughts and experiences with us. We acknowledge this has been particularly difficult during the COVID-19 period, especially when we have been unable to always work face to face with families.

“HSIB recognises the importance of Baby Loss Awareness Week and the aims of the alliance. We will be lighting a candle to join the global Wave of Light on Thursday 15 October in recognition of the loss families have experienced.”
