HSIB welcomes the publication of the report by the Joint Select Committee into the draft Healthcare Service Safety Investigations Bill.

On receipt of the committee's report, HSIB Chief Investigator, Keith Conradi, whose experience includes six years as the chief investigator of the Air Accident Investigation Branch, said:

"I am pleased to receive the report and would like to acknowledge the hard work of the committee and thank all parties who contributed both written and verbal evidence.

"We will now take the time to read the report and the recommendations whilst the process continues."

For HSIB it will be business as usual, conducting professional, independent investigations focused on improving patient safety across the healthcare landscape."

Notes to editors:

The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch’s role is to investigate safety incidents for the sole purpose of learning and improving patient safety across the healthcare sector without attributing blame or liability.

The intention is to build on HSIB’s work and strengthen its independence – via the legislation proposed in the draft Healthcare Service Safety Investigations Bill and the Joint Select Committee report. This would see the creation of a statutory Healthcare Safety Investigations Body, independent of the NHS and arm’s length from Government. Its creation is inspired by the airline industry, where a learning culture has led to dramatic improvements in safety.
